Welcome to Camarillo, California.
A city of southern California west of Los Angeles. It is a manufacturing center in a fertile farming area. Population: 60,400. It is the center of a fertile farm area where citrus fruits and flowers are grown. Camarillo also has electronic and aerospace industries as well as manufacturing plants. It is located in the eastern Oxnard Plain, with the Santa Susana Mountains to the north, the Conejo Valley to the east, and the western reaches of the Santa Monica Mountains to the south. The Ventura Freeway (U.S. Highway 101) is the city's primary thoroughfare. Camarillo is named for Adolfo Camarillo, one of the few Californios (pre-1851 California natives of Spanish ancestry) to retain his holdings after the arrival of Anglo settlers. Like most Ventura County cities, it is noted for its resistance to urban sprawl. Some of the most desirable land in the city limits, located on both sides of the Ventura Freeway, is permanently zoned for agricultural production. The city has grown significantly since the 1970s along with the southern California area. St. John's College and California State Univ. Channel Islands are located there.
For many years, the California State Mental Hospital was located in the city, so that persons suffering from mental diseases or tuberculosis could recover in Ventura County's balmy climate. Camarillans know the value of hard work, and they value their leisure time, as well. While small neighborhood parks and larger community parks provide facilities for activities ranging from tennis to soccer to swimming to picnics, three golf courses, including the elegant Spanish Hills Golf & Country Club, offer tournament-caliber challenges. Miles of jogging and biking paths and lanes wind their way through Camarillo's neighborhoods, while beautiful, clean beaches for swimming, sunning, sailing and surfing are just minutes away. And sparkling fresh-water lakes, nestled in mountains less than an hour's drive from the city, await those seeking the perfect spot to camp, swim, fish or water-ski, while hikers and mountain bikers will find trails to suit every ability.
